About Me

I'm a California girl who has spent a good portion of the past 20 or so summers in the small, rural Pennsylvania town of Conneaut Lake. I am absolutely in love with this area, but always find myself at a loss to describe it when asked. My blog is my attempt to capture Conneaut Lake.
My husband first introduced me to the lake in the early 1990's, not long after I'd met him. His family has strong roots here. Since my husband's grandparents owned and operated the Midway Hotel on the lake's east side, my mother-in-law grew up here. In fact, she now lives in the very house she grew up in, right behind the site of the hotel.  Unfortunately, the Midway Hotel was torn down in 1967, before my husband was even born.
By 1997, Bob and I were married and expecting our first child. Also that year, we inherited a small cottage adjacent to Midway Beach. Little did I know how much a part of our lives the cottage and the lake would become. I began escaping foggy San Francisco summers for the warmth and relaxation of the lake.
We now spend a good portion of each summer at our cottage on the lake. It's a wonderful time filled with family and old-fashioned summer fun.

Don't know how I came across your blog. We lived at Oakland Beach Hotel 1955-1960. My dad, Dave Agnew managed it and was a great friend of your husband's grandparents. I believe I have a photo of Larry and my Dad with the Wooley mammoth bones and probably some others. We went to school with Larry Lois, Maisie, Mikie and have many great memories of all of them.I also have some good photos of us riding the horses together during the "dude ranch times".

As another adult, who spent summers just north of Oakland, your blog is a great trip down memory lane. I recently read that Larry Sousa was going to build condos right after the Midway Hotel was torn down. Do you have any idea what happened to those plans? Have a great 2014!

Hi Marcy! I'm glad to hear that this blog brought back Conneaut Lake memories. You are right about the condos. I can't remember exactly why they weren't built. I'll see what I can find out. Maybe I'll even do a blog post. I hope you're able to make it back to the lake. ~ Becky

Hi Becky,

Just a question for you...no need to post it online to your blog, please.

I see that Eileen posted a comment about the "dude ranch times" at Oakland, which is where I spent my summers. That is only the second time I have ever seen a reference to the dude ranch and am trying to find out more about it. Would it be possible for you to forward my email to her so that I can get in touch with her?

Thanks!
Marcy

Hi Marcy - I'd love to give you that information, but unfortunately I don't have access to Eileen's email (or yours either, for that matter). Commenters don't have to leave that information, but I think I need to look into another system where I can get it. I would love to be able to answer some of these questions/comments by email.

Marcy - your comment prompted me to post an old Dude Ranch flyer. Look at my new post and see if it brings back memories http://summer-at-the-lake.blogspot.com/2014/01/oakland-beach-dude-ranch.html
I'd love to hear your stories!

Love the Dude Ranch picture. Thanks so much for posting it. I've read about tennis being available at both Oakland and Midway in their advertisements. Any idea where these courts were located? Our family does not remember them. Perhaps a sign of our advancing age?
