Chautauqua Institution, New York

I have a new favorite day trip from Conneaut Lake. Chautauqua Institution in New York is a quick one hour and 20 minute drive away. The turn-of-the-century community sits on the shore of Chautauqua Lake. Teddy Roosevelt described it perfectly when he called it 'America at its best'. The Institution began in the late 1800's as a school for Sunday school teachers, but evolved into a center for arts, education, religion and recreation. The moment you pass through the gate you realize that you are some place special. The streets are lined with beautiful 120-year-old cottages. Some people walk or ride bikes down the roads, while others sit on porches and read or people-watch. The Chautauqua Institution has a nine week summer series that is packed with lectures, classes and concerts. Many people stay for a week, and others visit for the day. We chose this particular day because David Oliver Relin, the author of Three Cups of Tea, was speaking. His book is one that everyone should read.

My mother, son and I just as we passed through the main gate. You couldn't find a more picturesque street. We felt like we were in a Norman Rockwell painting...

The main square, with the library at the end...

View of Chautauqua Lake from a rocking chair on the porch of the Antheneum Hotel...

David Oliver Relin spoke in the Hall of Philosophy, an open-air theater. He gave an amazing lecture on an amazing book...

The audience for Relin's talk...

More people listening to a speaker outside an outdoor theater...
